Really Bad Girls of the Bible (A “Blogging-For-Books” Review)

Liz’s Heart

One of the reasons I adore Liz Curtis Higgs is her kind heart, that explodes with joy whenever you read her writings or watch one of her DVD sessions. She is one of those Bible teachers, you want teaching you. She is one of those women of God, that you would long to have mentor you.

When it comes to her sense of humor, this book is definitely not lacking. Her humor is readily present, to bring laughs of community as we study together. It isn’t as though you are reading a regular book, but as though you were spending time with a trusted friend – studying God’s Word together. It makes reading this book, a joyous experience.

The Book

I have had the privilege to review her book, Really Bad Girls of the Bible. While I confess I am still reading this book, I thought it was finally time to share this book with you all.

Just as I enjoyed reading “The Girl’s Still Got It” (Ruth’s story) and “It’s Good to Be Queen” (Queen Sheba’s story), I am enjoying and celebrating the truths I find in this book as well.

In this particular book, Higgs combines her humor, love for Jesus and His Word, and her ability to research and does it so well. I am so thankful for the calling God has put on Liz’s heart, because many women’s lives are impacted with each study she puts out.

We get the blessing of sitting together, learning about the power and grace of our great God, and knowing how He really does work all things together. We just have to take our cues from Him, and learn from others’ different choices whenever possible.

The Women

Through these women’s lives, there is much we can learn from them. Their mistakes. Their choices made by faith alone. Their pitfall choices, that left ill effects. Yes, we also learn one big other thing: how God has worked in their midst.

Making the choice to learn from them, makes us wiser than before and more eager to listen to the voice of God.

Bottom line: These ladies have a lot to teach us, and Higgs is more than willing to hop on the learning train with us!

In Really Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz takes us on a tour of a few women’s lives. Some of these women’s lives were really bad (hence the title). They have made some hard yet wise choices, while others made choices leading them down a foolish path. Like us, they have had choices to make and they made them. The nice thing is – we can avoid our own pitfalls, by examining theirs.

The women included in this study –

  • Medium of En Dor
  • Jael
  • The Adulteress
  • Athaliah
  • Bathsheba
  • Herodias
  • Tamar
  • The Bleeding Woman
