Modesty: More Than a Change of Clothes (NetGalley)

ModestyModesty: More Than a Change of Clothes is a book that gets to the heart of the issue. Modesty, is a popular topic in the church. But, here’s something we miss. Modesty isn’t solely about the outer wear, but the inner wear too.

What are our hearts wearing?

And, how can I pursue Christ in a God-honoring way?

While clothes is part of what modesty is, it isn’t the whole story.

Martha Peace and Kent Keller join up to compose this book on modesty.

Why I Recommend…

Truthfully, I have read different things on modesty – and yet this is the best book I have read on the subject. I would highly recommend it to my family, friends, fellow readers, and complete strangers. It is just that good.

Two things I absolutely love about this book.

  • Kent offers the other perspective that rarely have I seen in a modesty type book. The guy perspective. We get the chance to read about how our choice in clothes can affect our brothers-in-Christ and lead them astray. While we may think “it’s not my problem,” it is our problem. Let’s not be like Cain who said, “Who am I? My brother’s keeper?” Let’s take care of our brothers-in-Christ, through working on our hearts before choosing our clothes.
  • I love the way Martha and Kent switch off, so we can have multiple perspectives on the subject of modesty and what God’s Word has to teach us when it comes to modesty of the heart and appearance. Together they teach us, the reader, using the Old and New Testaments to give us a fuller picture on this important subject. They don’t stop there, but continue through the whole book sharing how we can be modest.

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father (Col. 3:17, NLT).

As of right now, it is available in kindle form for only $2.99. Consider checking it out.

  1. I have heard enough conversations on modesty to know that it’s nonsense. Nobody does it the other way round: Brothers, you got to help your sisters to keep from sinning, so you can’t wear anything that causes them to lust. It’s not just about what you wear, it’s a heart attitude.

    • I disagree about modesty being nonsense, but that’s alright. It’s about honoring God in our choices and being accountable to our brothers in the church. It is not just a female issue though, but all people need to pursue modesty. Unless we address the heart attitude, we can’t really claim modesty as our lifestyle. It all goes back to Jesus. When we come to Jesus as our Savior, we are trading in our old ways and hardened heart for Him. The transformation doesn’t just stop. It’s about continuing to pursue it.

      Have a great day!
