“Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World”

Standard

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha WorldHaving a Mary Heart in a Martha World is one of those books that most Jesus-following women, involved in women ministry or even maybe found it on their own, have heard about. They have discovered the one necessary thing that is discussed in this book based on Luke 10:38-42. This book is well-received, because of its message. It is about a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is about putting our walk with Him at a higher priority, and choosing Jesus over any service we could perform to try and earn others’ accolade.

This book has been very life-affirming for me. I have been learning so much, as I read each chapter. I didn’t notice how much of Martha-related tendencies that I carry with me, and how it affects my relationship with Jesus Christ. So much time is spent on doing things, that may seem like good stuff to be involved in. Yet, somehow, I miss the one thing that is needed. God misses that intimacy time with me, just as I do. Only, it took this book to remind me that I do miss that much closer intimacy. What I am missing in my life is more Jesus!

This book is a call to slow down, and spend time with our Creator. We need to reconnect to our Life-Giver. Our Vine. John 15 talks about this. We need to stay connected to Christ, like Jesus teaches us. He is our Life-Giver. Mary knew what she was doing when she stopped everything to sit at Jesus’ feet.

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself;
it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
(John 15:4)

No amount of service can replace our need to spend one-on-one time with the Lord. We must focus on that one necessary thing. Only then, can we know where to join the Lord in service.

There is only one thing worth being concerned about.
Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.
-Luke 10:42
