Discipleship Journal Reading Plan: Day 13

Matt. 5:33-48; Acts 8:1-25; Psalm 13; Genesis 31

Matthew: Our standards should be higher than those of this world. We need to honor what we say we will do with our actions, rather than our words. We need to seek peace and pursue it—even in the most difficult relationships. Let us be about: praying for those who persecute us—loving our enemies—and if anyone forces us to go one mile, let us also go an additional mile. Going above and beyond—because of who our Father is!
Memorable Verse: 5:48
Quote on “Eye for Eye”: Suffer any injury that can be borne, for the sake of peace, committing your concerns to the Lord’s keeping –Matthew Henry.

Acts: Many heard the Gospel as it was preached, and they believed. Many were baptized in Jesus’ name, and were given the Holy Spirit. Simon, the Sorcerer, was a wicked man—he wanted to buy the gift that only God could give. Only God can give us His indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Only God can save us from our sins. Salvation comes from Him! No amount of money can ever compare. God wants our hearts. The apostles rebuked Simon, and told him he needed to get right with God. Where do you stand with God? Do you need to ask forgiveness? Bring it before Him—He can free us from all bitterness and sin we have in our lives!
Memorable Verse:
8:6, 8, 20-23

Psalm: David gazes at his circumstances wondering “how long”, but his focus does not stay there. In 13:5-6—David writes, “But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me!”
Memorable Verse:
13:2, 5-6

Genesis: Based on the Scriptures, I see Laban as a man who is about control—even to a manipulative level. Over the course of twenty years, he changed Jacob’s wages (knowing Jacob had to provide for his wives and children—Laban’s daughters and grandchildren) ten times. How do you treat family like that? Jacob had to leave this place and be obedient to God. He chose to stay on the right path no matter what. Jacob describes the work he gave Laban in 31:38-42. Jacob gave his best no matter how Laban treated him! Lord, help us to honor You in everything!

Jacob’s Dream: 31:11-13
God’s Words to Laban: 31:24
The Situation: 31:38-42
Covenant: 31:44, 48-54
